Accident 2009

Chris Saint and his crew took Overlord on her first cross-channel outing of the year, visiting Cherbourg and then to Alderney on 28 April. Off the north of Alderney, in open water, there was a violent collision with what we have now concluded was a submerged shipping container, or some similar man-made object. Henry and Betty Jeffries both suffered cracked ribs from being thrown around by the impact, but are recovering well.

Here is an extract from Chris Saint’s insurance incident report which rather understates the severity and shock of a sudden stop from 6kt.

From Chris Saint’s incident report … “The incident occurred whilst Overlord was on passage from Cherbourg to Braye Harbour, Alderney. High Water at Cherbourg was at 1054 BST with a height of 6.2m. The tide runs NE at the Alderney Race until approximately at or before the time of the incident.
